Finding list price of vehicle

Hello all,
would anyone know where to find the original list price of a vehicle, ideally via the VIN or reg plate? Honest John etc shows my car under the 40k limit, but the logbook says it attracts the additional tax and therefore must have been over 40k when purchased.

Any help appreciated.
Thanks

It was likely options that took the car over the £40k.
How near is it according to Honest John?

If the car's not that old then you'll get an idea from the current price list which you should be able to download from the manufacturer website.

If it has the tax applied, then the list was definitely over the threshold when it was new... Options are included, not just base price.
  • Thanks for the feedback I'm about 2k under the 40k threshold according to HJ. It may well be the optional extras that have pushed over the 40k.
  • So where does the government get this information from when it comes to calculating VED? I’m looking to buy a car which may be close to the threshold: I’m not going to buy one which attracts the VED surcharge

The list price including any options is submitted by dealers when the vehicle is first registered with DVLA.  From this the VED is calculated.

An important point that some miss is this expensive car supplement is for five years and it's paid from when the car is a year old.

So when new (it's first year) it's rate is based on emissions.
The VED and expensive car supplement is then paid for year two to six.

Currently this means a new car producing over 255g/km of Co2 will pay £2745 when it's registered for the first year.
Then for year two, three, four, five AND six it will pay the flat VED rate + £410 supplement.

And yes, this supplement is based on the inclusive price of the car.
This includes all the extras and no you can't deduct deposit contributions from that.

From the second taxing, not from a year old.

If it's being taxed as a second-hand car by a new keeper, then it applies from the first taxing by the new keeper, even if that's only a few weeks old.

Likewise if it was SORNed, over the winter or for whatever other reason.
