Energy company leaving us on variable

Hi all,

we’ve built up quite a large debit due to the energy company leaving us on their variable tariff from apr-Oct last year.

Our tariff had ended and they said they’d emailed, which I didn’t receive or had gone into my junk. I’ve rang them a couple of times on this and asked why they didn’t call or even mention this when I’d had calls with them during that period.

I’m normally good at tracking this stuff, but with lockdown and homeschooling just totally forgot it’s ended.

Any advice as I’m about to reluctantly pay it off

Thanks

This works both ways.  While the company probably should have emailed, there was nothing to stop you making a note of the end date yourself and finding a new deal when that one ended.  Unfortunately variable/standard tariffs are not cheap and this is what happens when your fix expires.

You will own the money.  You've used the electricity/gas, so it needs to be paid for.

It is not really the energy company's fault that you have ended up with a tariff that may not be now suitable for you.

I use a wall calendar to keep track of renewals etc, some people use the mobile phones apps.

Do you supply meter readings every month, or if smart meters check them against your online account. What they are billing you and debit / credit on your account?

My advice is pay what you owe and switch to a tariff that suits you.

Not sure why you should have a high bill for a summer period .    Is this possibly due to estimated readings at the end of the fix and then an actual in October.

    What do you mean by high ?   -  £100, £1000 ?

Your tariff end dates will have been on your bills.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

You should be looking at your bills regularly (better to look at the pdf ones rather than just a balance on an online account. The bills should clearly state when your tariff end date is so you know when to switch!
