Strange speed test results

Options
I've just done a speed test on my laptop and my phone. Both connected via wifi at home. Laptop is Dell inspiron, phone iPhone 6s. Both only on house wifi - no data on phone.

Download speed on laptop through Google chrome 8.9 mbps

Download on iPhone also Google chrome 36.6 mbps

I realise a check via cable would be more accurate but a difference of 27 mbps?

I am digitally dumb, any ideas or suggestions welcome, Thanks.

    Windows 10? If so:

    1. Find the Wifi icon at the bottom right near your clock, right click and select "Open network and internet settings"

    2. When the settings screen opens, you should see "Properties" button, click that

    3. Scroll down and you will see a section called "properties" that will show the following info:

    4. Press the "Copy" button and post the results here - remove the MAC address.

    Reasons for the difference?

    1. Different bands as per a previous comment, 2.4 Ghz is slower but should still achieve 100+ mbps unless it is falling back to a compatibility protocol such as 802.11b/g.

    2. If the laptop is on a different band, could be interference, 2.4 Ghz suffers a lot more from interference from household appliances. Also adjacent networks (neighbours) could be on the same or overlapping channels causing an issue.

    3. No idea what the network adaptor you have / PC age / model etc so all these could be a factor - please provide laptop model / age/

    4. Is the PC operating a VPN? Is there something else running in the background sucking data / processing power?

    5. Browser based speed tests aren't always the best, download an app based one such as Ookla Speedtest

That looks spot on, link speed of 866 should be capable of 600-700 mbps real world download speed (or whatever your broadband tops out at) so can't understand why it is topping out at 8.9 mbps.
