Insurance Scammers

Options
I was involved in a car accident late last year, the other driver admitted fault, and my insurance company is still dealing with the claim.

What I find strange and annoying is, I keep getting phone calls from people claiming to be from an insurance company, they keep changing the phone numbers as I block them each time, they also say they are either from the Accident claim center, or the National accident advice center, or the Independent insurance bureau.

I am trying to find out how they know when I had my accident, the car hire firm's name, and some other details that should surely be confidential.

I can buy a list of 1,000 names and telephone numbers for pennies... I call up people saying I'm calling about your accident and you add two and two together and get thirteen and assume I know something about the accident you were in and normally you then give more details that they can then use in the next call if they don't get you to sign up this time.

I have to say non-fault calls have dropped for me in recent years, these days its a calls about the police about to arrest my for National Insurance non-payment but a few years ago it was once a week at least I'd get such a call despite the only accident I've been in the last decade was when I drove into a police car.

Historically there did used to be a small trade in garages etc passing details of customer on to accident management companies... so you go for a quote to see if its worth claiming or not and they sell your details but I am fairly sure the market has dropped off for this these days.

I'm guessing that they did not provide you with exact/approximate claim details, but commented that 'our records show that you have been involved in a non-fault claim in the past 3 years' ?   This being the case, there has been no leakage of personal data.  You have simply been called by a firm, who are probably in breach of GDPR regulations in a numbers of ways.

No, it's not one of those phone calls.
I thought I explained clearly they know details that only the insurance companies involved know, without me telling them anything, I only confirm my name when someone calls me.
My insurance company's lawyer told me they do not know how these people get details of claims, all they know is it happens :(.
