Wells Fargo

My daughter used to be cabin crew for Air New Zealand and as part of the job, she received expenses which she put into a Wells Fargo account in Los Angeles.
She has now left Air New Zealand and the money is stuck in this account. She has over $7000 and has been told that she needs to close the account in person. Obviously she's not going to travel all the way to Los Angeles to do this. Is there any other way of closing the account and re-claiming her money?

Couldn't she open up something like a revolut card, transfer a small sum from the Wells Fargo account as US$ onto the revolut card and then transfer it into GBP and then send it to her UK bank account?

Obviously I would only try this with a small sum say $10 first and I have no way of knowing if your daughter would get charged for having a nil balance on her Wells Fargo account.

If this does work, I would only transfer small amounts each time

    Or alternatively there's this form Microsoft Word - OPR9081_Proof 1.docx (wellsfargomedia.com)
  • She should ask Wells about performing a "money wire" - effectively a SWIFT transfer from her Wells account to whichever account she wants to receive the money in to. She will need the destination account's BIC code and account number, or IBAN. Then - for now - just leave the account open, although check whether they will charge any account maintenance fees.

A Thai friend of mine had a joint account with her American husband in San Francisco, they lived in Thailand and when he passed away the only way to close the account was to go to SF to do it in person.

Moving money out may be possible, but if they say closure must be in person then that's that.
