Seems kinda dodgy, but I have heard of them before and always believed they were legit

They were the best of the former Big-6 companies. They are now owned by Ovo Energy.
  • They were good but since being taken over they got rid of a lot of very experienced staff.
last I heard they were looking to outsource the call centre to South Africa
Be happy, it's the greatest wealth :)

SSE's customer service reputation was so bad that they agreed that unresolved complaints could be referred to the Ombudsman after six weeks instead of the usual eight, so that says it all.

It doesn't say it all. SSE and Scottish Power both got new IT systems at about the same time. Both got into a mess. However, SSE got a grip on the problems and within a relatively short time got to the top of the customer satisfaction rating  and stayed there. Scottish Power are still in a mess.

Citizens Advice show SSE and Scottish Power neck and neck in the bottom half of the ratings.

Trustpilot does have it's fans,I'm certainly not one of them.
Any information there's about as trustworthy as Amazon reviews, some treat it as gospel though.

sse.com is the website for SSE PLC, a multinational publicly traded company that is a constituent of the FTSE 100 and, amongst other operations, run power stations, wind farms, and are one of the UK's distribution network operators.
sse.co.uk is the website for what used to be SSE's retail energy division, which is now owned by OVO Energy. It's on this website that retail energy customers such as you and I would switch our energy supply, manage our accounts, etc. Whilst SSE sold this division to OVO Energy in 2020, OVO Energy still operate it under the SSE brand.
The reason for the discrepencies on Trustpilot is most likely that disgruntled customers are searching for SSE on Trustpilot, coming across the page for sse.com and, believing this is their energy supplier, are leaving negative reviews. Meanwhile, SSE retail energy (now operated by OVO Energy) are inviting via email those customers who have had a positive experience with them to leave a review on the correct sse.co.uk Trustpilot page.

    Thanks everyone

I actually ended up going for OVO

The price wasn't too bad if I get the TopCashback, and I didn't fancy going with a variable tariff
