Get - that manual is almost unreadable.  I find the only way to find answers to specific questions is to look at my question and either post on a forum like this or if urgent speak to a solicitor.  Reading that manual will confuse people and the average person in the street will be even more confused.

I had a query about my Father moving into a care home and selling his house.  Would it still be eligible for the additional allowance as he would no longer own when he passed.  I called HMRC and they were very helpful. That is all I wanted to know at this time.

For people like Mickey666 who is trying to answer questions on a forum they need to have a greater understanding of the subject or where to find the relevant information.

If I had a greater understanding of the subject or where to find the relevant information then I wouldn't need to ask the question on a forum!

If everyone here shared your view then we might as well shut the forum down now.
Trying to answer peoples question is when the problems start as it is very easy to get somethings wrong as what applies in one situation may not apply in other new ones.

eg. The rules around the transferable RNRB are often a cause for confusion as some people think the first  deceased had to have relevant property and/or close inheritors.

That's a fair point.  Many of the questions raised on this forum have many dependencies that are not always fully described or sometimes not even known by the OP, but if that's a problem then it's just another reason not to bother with the forum.

I prefer to think that OPs do their best to describe their problem and forumites do their best to answer them, often posing additional questions for the good reasons you mentioned.  In this way, more information can be revealed and the combined responses begin to tease out an answer which is helpful, even if it's not definitive.

With complex issues a forum is always going to struggle to provide a definitive answer and follow up formal legal advice might well be required, but if the OP learns something and becomes better informed about how to seek that formal advice (or that it's necessary) then I think that's about all we can expect from this forum.  Or any forum.  It's a discussion down the pub, not a legal chambers ;)

It is often a drip feed  as the question are starting from a point of little(no) knowledge and people don't know what's important or relevant yet

When there is missing information then the questions need to be asked to get that information.

The classic one that comes up a lot is I inherited part of a house from my mum/dad  but it often turns out it was really a IPDI trust and they have not inherited anything(yet)

Posters pile in with all the stuff about you own x% of a property when its sold you will need to pay CGT etc.

It is surprising the number of regulars that do this repeatedly even when it is the obvious first question to ask.

The learning is a 2 way exercise when a new scenario comes up if not sure go looking for the answer using the data resources you do know about.
