Learner driver insurance

Is it better to have 2nd car owned and insured in my name, then get wife and teenage son added as named drivers.
Or is it better to get him separate learner driver insurance. With car still owned and insured by me.
is there any more options.

The key question is who's going to be the main driver of this vehicle? Insuring it in your name with the learner driver as a named driver is a major red flag on if you are trying to defraud the insurer by "fronting"... claiming your the main driver when in reality its your son.

Whats the plan when he passes? If this is his car really and he'll be the main driver you may want to just bite the bullet and insure it in his name from the outset. Learner drivers are much cheaper to insurer than just passed drivers!
