Bill - New Smart Meter

Hello,

I had new Smart Meters fitted on 22nd April by EON.

When I log in to my meter readings it is saying "last reading done by Meter Reader 22nd April.

My next Bill is due 30th April but there are no further readings showing.

Do I need to do a manual reading? or will the Smart Meter reading update by then?

I selected send data daily.

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks.

It can take some days, even weeks,  for a smart meter to appear in an online account. A supplier can only access/interrogate the meter once it is fully commissioned and the appropriate security certificate has been sent out to the meter via the DCC. The manual reading on your account is most likely the final reading for the meter that was removed: new smart meters will normally start at 00000 or a little below. It is unlikely that you will get a smart meter bill on the 30th. Entering a manual reading might confuse the billing system.

You can check whether your smart meters are sending data by signing up for a N3rgy.com account (use the I am a consumer link). You will need your MPAN and the number on the bottom of your IHD.

Finally, you will normally receive an ESME commissioned message on your IHD when the electricity meter has been fully set up, and a GSME commissioned message for the gas meter if you have one. I would have also gone for 30 minute usage recording as this provides a lot more detailed way of looking at your actual usage. Also, it is the way that time of use tariffs will be structured in the future: billing is done using the 30minute data not meter readings.

PS Ignore the 47.97p/kWh cost. I have PV solar which distorts the unit price. All energy that I take from the Grid costs me 5p/kWh. The daily costs are accurate and include the standing charge.

@ Dolor, please can I ask what tariff you have which gives you access to the 5p/kWh rate? Thanks

Octopus Go: 5p/kWh from 0030 to 0430hrs and 14.62p/kWh for the rest of the time. The tariff is still open to new customers. A 5 hour Go Faster variation is available by invitation with blocks starting at 2030hrs at 5.5p/kWh. Octopus Energy's T-o-U tariffs do not show up on PCWs. NO EV required.

    Morning mkcj  :)

    Thank you Dolor,

It can take a little bit of time for the new meter details to be updated on to your account, as this all comes through to us electronically.

You can double check though, as you've logged in to your online account you can check the reads from the meter exchange date match the removal/install reads. You should also be able to see the meter serial numbers.

You may have agreed to half hourly reads, so although they will come through to us, they don't show on your online account. If we don't get a read through ready for the bill date, you can pop these on to your online account.

If you do need a bit more info, please do get in touch.

    Thank you

    Thanks Dolar.

If only I could get a smart meter installed  :(

Attempt 1 was last year whilst still with SSE. The installer couldn't get a radio signal for the meter so ended up just replacing the old fashioned rotating wheel meter and Eco7 teleswitch with a new style 5 lead dumb Eco 7 meter.

Attempt 2 was scheduled for last Wednesday but the installer never turned up. No message or phone call to say they couldn't make it. I complained to our new provider EDF and they gave me £20 compensation and arranged for the install to be rescheduled for tomorrow.

Attempt 3 should have been happening tomorrow, but I got a message saying this has now been cancelled due to a lack of resources. Now rebooked for the middle of May. This time £30 in compensation. I only hope that when the next appointment falls due, it actually happens AND there is now a radio signal.

The Octopus Go Faster 5 hour tariff with a 0130 start would be ideal for us as we use 67% of our 22,000 kWh overnight charging up our 30 Amp Aga storage oven. At £5p a kWh it's great value and the day time rate is very competitive as well.

I wonder if it Is possible to insist that a smart meter is fitted and that a GSM based unit is installed if there is no radio signal for the North of England dedicated Smart Meter network?

I don’t believe that you get a choice.

Smart metering in the North of England uses a dedicated UHF radio network run by Arqiva rather than using the GSM mobile phone network.

I just wondered if they had the ability to install a GSM equivalent if the UHF signal was not available.

I live in the North of England. The mobile phone signal is very weak in the area where I live.  Of four local households that I know of, two had smart meters installed that don't work (in a smart manner) and two had applications that failed because the installer concluded that a smart meter would not work.  If smart meters really use UHF radio here, it does no better than the mobile phone signal.
