Via Android........Sending messages via Messenger is great, simply because you're able to see when and if they are read, as the icon drops, whether they reply is immaterial.
Send text messages using the phone/messages facility is useful when you need to be reminded of hospital appointments etc. but to use that medium to send a text to anyone I find frustrating as the model phone I use, Samsung A70, dosen't give any indication when it's been seen/read. Despite look through settings, I cannot find anywhere that allows me to "toggle" and set it up..................unless you know differently?. If so, please enlighten this old chap.

There are step by step instructions here
https://www.helpforsmartphone.com/public/en/samsung/galaxy-a70/android-9-0/guides/26/Configurar-SMS-Samsung-Galaxy-A70
The delivery reports switch can be seen at step 7. It might not be available if your network does not support the option.

am I right is supposing that function tells you that a text has been delivered, not that it has been read?0

pbartlett no, last night I needed to notify two poeple or an impending hospital admission, they had their phones on silent so sent texts, I had no way of knowing if they had read them.1

For read receipts:
- On Android: Settings > Chat features, Text Messages, or Conversations and turn on desired Read Receipts options. There will be two options - request and send read receipts.
In reality they are more trouble than they are worth and I wouldn't bother because the problem is, if the recipient doesn't have "send read receipts" switch on, then you will not get a read receipt even when they have read the message.
If the recipient isn't on Android (eg Apple) you won't get a receipt.
Also people can read a short text message from their notification screen or smart watch for example without actually triggering the read receipt.
So you can never be 100% sure that the recipient hasn't read your message when you don't get a read receipt and might never get one when they do read your message.1 -
There's no way to know if anyone has read, understood and acted upon at text.Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.2

When you say "texts", if you mean SMS, there is no read verification system in the standard.1
