Avocado

I’m quite proud of having germinated an avocado seed.  The result is now nearly 60cm high in a 21cm pot.  I suspect the pot is too small, any idea what size pot I should put it in?

It’s also getting too big for my windowsill.  How tender are avocado trees?  Could I put it out in my front garden which is very warm, south, slightly south west facing?  Presumably I’d need either to protect it or bring it in for the winter.  Protection would be better as I suspect it will soon be too big and unwieldy to handle.

And just in case anyone thinks I’m daft enough to expect to harvest actual avocados, I’m not!

Potting on should be an inch or so bigger.
They make attractive plants. I used to get them germinating in my compost heap and they survived in shelter with no care right through the winters.
They were so healthy I tried to give them away to people but I think the 40ft was what put them off :)
I'd put it outside and give it protection but I'd sink the pot in the soil to restrict root growth and size. A cheap plastic one would do.

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

Never tried but GQT on radio 4 had someone on a bit since saying they will grow outside, maybe not in Aberdeen etc
It seems they grow quickly, and eventually a decent frost cuts them down, but they sprout up the following year for a nice exotic type of foliage, rinse & repeat

I would plant it out in the pot so you can move it back inside during any extreme weather. You will probably need to bring it back indoors during the winter months as they are not that cold hardy. Maybe invest in a small greenhouse or enclosed outdoor plant shelving unit if you want to keep it outside during the winter.
