I'd think about how you use the room and light accordingly using lamps, regardless of whether you go down the spotlight / pendant route. I have Slim Jim uplighters everywhere I might want to read (8 in total) and they given out the most beautiful light. I bought them over 20 years ago and they are still going strong.
