Two threads in one if you like. My house is being renovated with new plaster and flooring. Of course budget is limited therefore these questions. I'd think about how you use the room and light accordingly using lamps, regardless of whether you go down the spotlight / pendant route. I have Slim Jim uplighters everywhere I might want to read (8 in total) and they given out the most beautiful light. I bought them over 20 years ago and they are still going strong.

Trouble comes when an insect takes an interest, the aroma of barbecuing moth is quite acrid.
