Did you mean a Victorian new build?
I also think a lot of the bad older houses have been demolished, the better built ones have been retained.
TBF, a lot of 1930s and earlier housing stock was demolished in a relatively short period in the early 1940s for reasons completely unrelated to their build quality...
  • I think it’s horses for courses personally; we moved from a late 60s terrace into a new build last August. Our previous house clearly had stood the test of time and had nothing wrong with it structurally however it was freezing cold, cost a fortune to heat and was a constant battle to prevent condensation. The sound proofing was hideous as well.

Moving to the new one, the house is traditionally built and is as warm as toast but well ventilated. We got lucky with the one we have because the rooms are large and airy, admittedly some new builds are on the smaller side but there are good size ones out there too. The build quality is excellent and the only significant snag we had was that the heating pipes were cross threaded on install so the heating didn’t work upstairs. It took the developer less than 24 hours to send a plumber and a few hours later it was all sorted. Otherwise it’s all good, fantastic in fact.

I’ve said this before on a previous thread that sadly some new builds are built incorrectly and cause the homeowner massive grief but these are the only ones you hear about - not the 1000s of homes that are handed over in tip top condition and give the owner many years of hassle-free ownership. Most developer warranties expire after 2 years so we have an incentive to get the snags sorted before then.

We bought a new build in the early 90s.  Been in it until this year. It was well insulated, low-maintenance and just ticked along nicely. Replaced the bathroom / kitchen / boiler 3-4 years ago but did very little else.

We're now in a 280 year old listed building. We've had it for almost 3 years, most of the time having both homes. We've spent more on the roof in maintenance since we bought it than we did on the entire other house in almost 30 years.  We found a little time capsule from previous owners. It had a major refurb in 1963, 1987 and really needs it again.
