Returned Cheque

Hi, I'm looking for a bit of advice. I got a cheque for just over £1,000 on Monday from HSBC as payment for bank charges they had taken from me (many years ago I). I did a PPI search with ALLAY and I wondered if this is where the cheque came from (it didn't ,mention ALLAY in the covering letter).
I paid the cheque by posting it off to Santader where it appeared in my account on Wednesday (but not cleared). Today when I looked the cheque had been returned and was gone from my pending balance.
I phoned Santander who said I should contact HSBC.
I phoned HSBC and spoke to a fairly unhelpful person who gave me an incorrect e-mail address to send my details off to (and a photo of the cheque) as she could find no record of HSBC having sent me a cheque.
The e-mail bounced back so I contacted the HSBC via Twitter. After giving my details again, they asked me to phone the number I phoned earlier in the day, as they also can't find an record of sending me a cheque.
Am I being scammed in some way? Is this a known scam?
If not, what would people's advice be to chase this up. I've not had an HSBC loan or account for at least 10 years.
Thanks,
Robert

Unless things have changed dramatically in recent years you should get the cheque back in the post detailing the reason that it’s bounced. I wouldn’t bother chasing anything until you receive it.2

Allay (https://www.allay.co.uk/) seemed to have ceased doing claims work - as from just 3 weeks ago.
Could that be a complicating factor? (I have no idea, but am just pointing their position has very recently changed)
Some more information about the covering letter might help - what did it actually say and where was it from?
