How long do the roads have to be completed after the housing development has finished?

We moved into our new home November 2018. the development was finished in 2019, but the roads and paving have still not been tarmacked.
Is there a limit on the time allowed to complete the job?

Thanks,

Steve.

Do you have a contract that suggests they agreed to do it?  If not then it may just stay as it is forever

The roads still hadn't been made good when I moved out of a new-build after 2.5 years.  Is it a large development?  If so they'll probably start on them after the last unit is built.

Have the roads been adopted by the local Council?  The developer should have completed them before they went off site.

Council only adopt fully completed roads and pavements where all snags have been repaired.

That's ridiculous. Mine was done 3 months after I moved in but my house was at the beginning of the section. They did them in sections as the houses were completed which meant for the houses at the end of our section it was only a couple of weeks after they were completed.

live on a big new development. well over 5 years since building finished and not all roads adopted. there getting round to it but its pretty slow going
  • My mum moved into her new home about 15 years ago, the last house on the development was sold about 13 years ago- only in the last few months do they seem to be moving towards putting down the "top layer" of tarmac.
To be fair, the only issue my mum has with the time it's taken is that she's desperate for Royal Mail to install a postbox and they're insistent that they won't do so until the roads are adopted.

Check with your Council's roads department to see if the road has been adopted and ask if there is a bond in place for completion.  There is a problem in some developments where the bonds were agreed and paid, but commencement of development delayed.  Due to subsequent inflation on materials costs, it can be cheaper for the developers to walk away and lose the bond rather than pay the costs of road surfacing.   Totally unscrupulous behaviour on the part of the developers, but that seems to be the nature of the beast!
  • Thanks for your comments, some of which show there are people in worse state than me. I will look into the councils road dept and see what I can find.
