Seiss 4

Hello . Could someone help please !
Im self employed and have relied on the Seiss grants so far , I have been waiting forever it seems for the 4 th grant , my work has suffered and I have a young family , I found out that you cannot claim if you filed tax return later than march 2nd.  I did not know this and my tax was filed on 9th march . I did not have the money to file my tax with my accountant and had to borrow money to do this . It seems unbelievably unfair to suddenly base this decision on this . I thought it was about covid and having no work . I have paid all my tax in the past . It seems the government are clutching at straws to recoup monies back . I will take this as far as I can . Please any advice is welcome . Nick

not much help , but siess 1/2/3 were all based on prompt/on time tax returns. (you should have been aware and so should your accountant)

No one to my knowledge has successfully overturned a refusal for SEISS based on late submission of a tax return.

It should have been done by 31st January but it was extended to 2nd March. As you didn't submit it by that deadline you won't be able to claim for grant 4 or 5.

There was a lot of people that couldn't claim the previous SEISS grants because they missed the tax return deadline for last year and there was nothing at all they could do about it.

Have you used a benefits calculator to check entitlement to Universal Credit? If you live with a partner you claim as a couple. A claim for UC will end any tax credits you may already be claiming and once you submit the UC application you can't go back to tax credits.

The Government helped you out by extending the deadline from 31 January to 2 March.

Paying tax in the past has no connection with not submitting your tax return on time.

You are at a dead end, there is nowhere for you to take this.

  • Yep, as above there’s nothing you can do - you need to focus on how to make money elsewhere as you’re flogging a dead horse.
Tax return deadlines are no secret, and if you were late for whatever reason that’s a ‘you’ problem.

Hi Nicky, as I don’t know what your line of work is my advice might not be appropriate but have/can you apply for an ARG (Additional Restrictions Grant) from your local council, every council in the country was given funding from the government to pay out to small businesses, LRSG (Local Restrictions Support Grants) for business ratepayers and ARG for non-business ratepayers.
Market Stall holders for example are entitled to ARG, each council seems to have its own set of rules and deadlines but it won’t do you any harm to have a look at your local council website.

'Grasping at straws'? It seems the gov't can do nothing right. The first 3 SEISS grants were based on 18/19 tax returns and this unfairly excluded many who were new to self employment and had not filed for that year. Now SEISS 4 has been delayed and extended specifically to include tax year 19/20, people are now complaining that they didn't have time to file...
OP, you could have filed at any time from 6/4/20. You can't say you 'didn't know' the deadline, as until the budget announcement relating to SEISS 4, it was always 31/1/21, just as it has always been. If the deadline has been extended again beyond 2/3/21, then even more delays would have resulted.
Is it fair that the vast majority of applicants should incur further delays just because you could not file your return in the nearly 11 months you had available?
