Will claiming UC affect my parents benefits?

Hi -
I am 22 and unemployed due to a disability. I receive PIP. I have never worked. I was studying but am taking time off due to ill health so am not currently a full time student. If I were to claim universal credit would this affect my parents entitlement? They receive esa and housing benefit and I’m worried if I were to claim, they would be affected. I have been told different things from different people so am looking to clarify my entitlement.

Your parent benefits are totally separate to yours. If you are unable to work because of a health condition then you will need a fit note from your GP to start the work capability assessment process off.Have you also received any student loan?0

Hi Poppy,
Thanks for getting back to me. Does this mean it won’t affect my dads ESA claim or housing benefit as I have seen on some websites about non dependent deductions whereby they take my income into account. This is what’s causing the confusion. Any ideas? poppy12345Your parent benefits are totally separate to yours. As you are under 25, if you have no earned income when claiming UC then there's no non dependant deductions. https://england.shelter.org.uk/housing_advice/benefits/housing_benefit_deductions_when_living_with_non_dependantsIf either of your parents receive either DLA care or PIP daily living then there will never be any non dependant deductions regardless of age or circumstances. ESA is not affected.

https://england.shelter.org.uk/housing_advice/benefits/housing_benefit_deductions_when_living_with_non_dependantsNo deduction is made for a young person under 25 who gets:
universal credit - with no earned incomeThere are no non dependant deductions for ESA.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.0 -

Yes indeed. I also think that was a typo from calcotti.
