Lloyds Avios card

  • Both my husband and I have the Lloyds Avios Card and looking for a new card.  The problem is often Amex is not taken by certain suppliers, especially the one's my husband deals with.  Am looking for a credit card that gives a better cash back than the new Lloyds one or Avios points.  Preferrably one there is no annual fee.

Co-op Members Credit Card gives you 0.3% back, that's about it sadly.

If you would consider Virgin Points instead of Avios, their credit cards are pretty unbeatable.

Conventional wisdom would suggest going with an Amex (either the BA version if you want to continue collecting Avios, or the platinum cashback if you just want the £££s), and then having a backup Visa/MasterCard for anything you can't use Amex for. Remember as well that if a retailer takes PayPal, then it's another route to using Amex if they don't directly accept it (TUI holidays being an example).

Plus there's the general wisdom of having more than one card anyway, as backup (rather like bank accounts...).

That said, if you really do only want one card, and your spending patterns mean that it can't be Amex, then either the Coop one as mentioned, or there is John Lewis, which pays 0.25%, and 1.25% in JL/Waitrose - if you shop there much? Anyway, that one is my backup card for when I can't use my Amex platinum...

Unfortunately for you, Amex is by far and away the leading supplier of rewards credit cards. It's worth considering them still because I think you'd be surprised how many places accept Amex. I manage to put at least 90% of my spending on Amex.

If you don't want an Amex, the choice is pretty limited nowadays since the EU introduced a cap on credit card interchange fees of 0.3% for Mastercard and Visa.

The Co-Op card mentioned above is ok, but you need to have a Co-op bank account I believe.

An alternative is Barclaycard Rewards which pays 0.25% cashback. This card is also really good if you ever travel abroad since it has zero fees for overseas transactions.

There are a few other rewards Mastercards listed here, but they're not as good value as Amex:
