Your loan is a pre-96 student loan, and is therefore subject to the limitation act 1980.
After a period of 6 years, where there has been no payment, or written contact from the debtor, the loan will become statute barred.
Has there ever been a period of 6 years where this might apply ?

So if someone has a physical disability you think its fair that they have to prove 6 years.
What number of years do you think would be fair for Mental Illness?
And what about cancer or a host of other illnesses that can kill, keep you off work permanently or can respond well to new treatments/surgery etc and people make good recoveries? Should those be treated like physical disabilities or mental illness?
The fair answer is to have a set value that applies to all, this sort of value is often used in certain insurances too and we do receive certificates from GPs saying mental illness will prevent them return to work. The fact your GP doesn't want to put their name to the certificate isn't the rules fault.
The world is full of blanket rules, I get free prescriptions because of a birth defect and risk a fine if I don't remember to renew the certificate in time every 5 years. It makes sense for cancer suffers having to renew because not many cancers last that long but after 40 years I am fairly certain I am not going to grow the missing part of my brain. Is it discrimination against me? No, its part of the rules I agreed to when I signed up.1
