Student Loan Write Off Loophole Discriminates Against People with Mental Illness

Yes you did, you wrote “ I am 65 and my profession is a teacher, but owing to my age, I won't be able to teach in the state sector after my contract with my current school ends in August. I do have a very modest teaching pension, alongside my state pension.” in 2010.Jessy75 said:I did not say anything about my age actually.
Non disabled people are NOT in the same position as disabled people. And having a mental health condition does not come with the same issues necessarily as having a physical condition.
I posted this topic because actually I was asking if anyone here has had the same issues as I have. Perhaps I was stupid to think I could discuss this subject without being judged - it is evidently clear this is not possible.
No-one’s judging you, I’m just pointing out that you’re not keeping your story straight.5 -
And on the subject of consistency OP, how does this square with your statement that you have been unable to work since 2006?GeordieGeorge said:

I will take a stab that Jess is the daughter in the 2010 thread and either shares a user name/login with mother or had written the 2010 thread posing as the mother for the question3

That is exactly the case. I had actually forgotten about that previous post, which was about a relative and not about me.Caz3121 said:I will take a stab that Jess is the daughter in the 2010 thread and either shares a user name/login with mother or had written the 2010 thread posing as the mother for the question
It is intersting that when I've posted about this in groups for disabled people, the resounding response is both supportive AND in agreement with my statement that this is a prejudiced and discriminatory policy.0 -
Whilst I have some sympathy for your circumstances I don't see how the policy is prejudiced or discriminatory. If you don't defer your loans each year and then don't pay you will fall into arrears. If you fall into arrears you can no longer defer nor will your loans be written off. That's the same for everyone so how can it be discriminatory for the same rules to apply to everyone?Jessy75 said:

Rather than having the debt written off due to unfitness to work is it possible the debt is now statute barred and therefore unenforceable? When did you last acknowledge the debt either by making a payment or acknowledging it in writing?

People on here are not going to tell you what you want to hear (apart from two, who seem to specalise in wrong/inaccurate posts) nor will they sugar coat things, they will however provide you with the correct information.Jessy75 said:

I do not think you have been treated in a discriminatory or prejudicial way, the requirements placed on you are the same for any other person, disabled or otherwise. In addition you will only repay towards the student loan if you earn over the threshold, otherwise it will cost you nothing, meaning that cost will be covered b taxpayers. If you do not think you will ever work again then you will never meet the threshold to make repayments, I can not see why you are complaining.5 -
It’s nice that you’ve found a group that will tell you what you wanted to hear; that being treated the same as everyone else is discriminatory. It’s wrong, of course, but seems to be what you were looking for.Jessy75 said:

If you’re in arrears, which the OP appears to be, then you can’t defer even if you earn below the threshold for repayment.MattMattMattUK said:

I struggle to find the loopholes. I do know the rules are being followed.Jessy75 said:, Honors and now their debt collectors Link, have been pursuing me to repay the loans, using the loopholes to keep me indebted to them.1 -
It's not really that interesting, or surprising, that a group of people who potentially have something to gain from changing the rules, as you do, might happen to agree with you.Jessy75 said:

It also isn't interesting, or surprising, that when you ask a group of people who have far less to gain and are largely disinterested third parties, that the support falls away is it?1
