Approximate cost of replacing aluminium guttering and downspouts?

Hi there

I've been struggling to find a roofer to replace our leaking cast iron gutters and cracked downspouts and when I eventually got a quote, I also got a bit of a shock.

Around 25m of aluminium guttering, hand painted black (not PPC), x2 aluminium downspouts and sorting out a bit of lead flashing on a semi-detached property... £5000.

Complicating factors are that the front of the house is x3 storey and will require scaffolding to do the work (not so at the rear, where they're happy to work off ladders as it's lower back there).

This price seems mad to me but it's a nightmare trying to find someone else to provide a quote.

Would be much appreciated if someone could give me some idea what I should be looking at for painted aluminium guttering/downspouts per metre including labour.

Why aluminium guttering painted black and not black uPVC guttering?

uPVC is durable, (Ours has been up for 50 years with no problems), provided it has been installed correctly with plenty of support brackets along it's length and at the joints

Check the internet for the prices of uPVC v Aluminium.

We have consent for steel or aluminium but would never be able to get it for uPVC, even the cast iron lookalike stuff. I prefer metal in any case and will pay the £5000 if it's a fair price, but it just feels way out. Called three other roofers this morning and they're all swamped, don't even have time to look at it.

Difficult to know without a breakdown of how £5k has been arrived at.  You should be able to do a fag packet calculation:

Scaffolding, internet for an idea of prices for three storeys.
Materials, priced from internet
Labour, £150-200 per person per day?
VAT
