Outside electric sockets, warning

Chatting to a co-worker friend last night I was was shocked to hear what happened to them.

Co-workers electric bills started to go up by quite a bit during summer and they though it was the heat and fans on all night, etc, new kitchen electric oven hob
and previous hob was gas, etc,.  Then they noted that bill were even higher for electric when they were on hols and once went away for 4 weeks but the 4 weeks
fell in to 2 seperate quarter monthly bills.

They were all unwell due to covid recent months and hardly eat etc and had takeaway delivers/etc and washing machine, drier hard used but bill still high.
They rang their electric people and told re spikes and then friend who is not great on online bills/etc got their online details and looked at the bills, usage on line and noted
that in the previous years the spikes were when they were all away from home. They have an outside plug and house next door to their semi is rented.
They put a covert cctv and told next door they they were going to see their dad who lives far away and alone - so they went away to see/support dad
returned a few days later, checked cctv, next door plugging in extension cable to their outside socket.

They are taking action to recover monies/etc

Presumably this socket is on a dedicated breaker in the consumer unit?

Just turn it off when they don't need it.

It would make me wonder what the neighbours were running off a 13amp extension which was sufficient to cause a noticeable 'spike' compared to the household's normal domestic consumption. A 'spike' isn't the same as the consumption not dropping as expected when the people were away.

Were the neighbours saving all their washing until the people went on holiday and then running the washing machine all day?
Maybe they had friends over in the evenings and got themselves an outdoor heater.

    2 x 13A socket (assuming a double) = 6kW = £21.60/day at 15p/kWh.

    Average UK household uses 3,730kWh/year = 10.2kWh/day = 420 watts = 1.8A at 230v.
