£500 one off payment

Hi all,

I was just wondering if anyone had had the one off £500 tax credits payment yet and what there circumstances are?

I ask as my partner lost his job last year and has suffered from Covid twice but luckily I have a job and we have been scraping by financially. We live off a teeny weeny amount after paying the mortgage and bills and it’s a massive struggle just to feed the kids. We go without a lot to make sure they are fed and to make sure they all look smart for school.

However, I earn £27k a year (I know people earn so much less and this is not meant to offend, my salary just about covers our bills) I have been told that I am only entitled to child tax credits and no other benefits due to my salary and not entitled to working tax credits due to my salary. The tax credits really helps cover the rest of the bills and food. But, I am wondering that because i don’t have working tax credits will that mean I don’t get the £500 payment? We could really do with it right now. I work over 40 hours a week and have been told if you work, claim tax credits but can’t get working tax credits because your salary is too high then I will still get it but I have not received a text or letter and I am frantically checking my account to see if any payments have been made yet. It’s another 8 days till payday and this would massively help.

Has anyone else had this payment? Did you get notification? What are your circumstances?

sorry if this post annoys anyone. It’s not my intention. We have never claimed benefits and always just scrapped by so this is new to me and we have not had much luck over the past year like many, many other people.

thank you everyone x

Dig out your last award notice. What does it say?
If it says working tax credit reduced to zero due to income you will get it.

If your tax credits includes WTC but you don't receive it because your income is too high then you will still receive the £500 one off payment. See link. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/new-one-off-500-payment-for-working-households-receiving-tax-credits

There's a couple of other threads here regarding this if you search.

  • Thanks. There is no mention of WTC on my last award or on any of my previous awards. Guess I won’t be getting the extra money :-( could of done with that due to the kids needing PE kits. Will just need to skip one of bills this month. Thanks all for your help.

If you don't receive payment by 23rd April then you'll likely not be entitled to it.

OP have you checked the benefit entitlement calculators such as entitled to or turn2us to see if you would be better off claiming universal credit? I’m not saying that would necessarily be the case but worth a go for the sake of a couple of minutes of your time.

We receive CTC still as our son was awarded the severe disability premium, otherwise our income is sufficiently high for a nil award. We are certainly over the threshold for WTC, but still 'entitled' because I work full--time. We received the £500 on Friday :) Got the text but it was generic; no letter.

If you work more than 24 hours/week you are eligible for WTC and your Tax Credit calculation should be based on both WTC and CTC.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.
