Do carpet fitters remove existing flooring?

You just have to ask them to quote for it. Normally they will quote for something like supply & fit, which would not include removal, but almost without exception they will quote to remove and dispose too because it's just a really common and natural thing for them to do.
Having said that, taking up carpet is one of the easiest jobs ever, as long as you have a suitable knife to cut it into manageable pieces and a utility bar and mallet to pop off the gripper strips. The laminate may be tougher if it's glued, but if you know how to remove a skirting board then it's unlikely to be too bad either, will just require more manual force and possibly a longer bar.
But if you don't want to be faffed with it, I wouldn't criticise anyone for not DIYing - it saves time and gives more work to someone willing to do it!0 -
As others said, this would depend on the contractor, but will definitely be charged extra. Removing a carpet is very easy and I would definitely recommend doing this well before the new carpet comes in. It all depends on how much time you have and whether you can dispose of the old carpet. But, it also gives you an opportunity to finally fix those creaky floorboards or clanging pipes.0
