Adding car into tax rebate

Hi everyone just a quick question.  So I got a car about 2 years ago for 10k. That time I was living with parents but was still self employed. My father helped me little to buy the car.  And was all paid for.  I used it for mostly for work around 70 of time it was used for work as I cant afford separate work vehicle. But at work some machine operated had a accident with my car and they refused to pay out.  Can I claim anything for losss ?

  • So you had to pay for repairs? That would be a normal claim as an expense in your accounts, restricted for private use of course.

No mate the car was a total write off. Had to use my second grant to get a work horse.

Did you claim the 45p mileage rate in your self-employment or actual costs?

You therefore claimed capital allowances based on the purchase price of 10000. You can now show a ‘sale price’ of zero and claim the whole of the written down value as at the end of your last set of accounts (less private use). For example, if the car has been written down to 8200 (after one year’s claim of 1800) you can claim the whole 8200 less private use.

That’s what I have done. But this is where I am getting a bit scared because my rebate is still pending. I put that as expense and other bits and bob for work.  And it added up to 12k plus.

    Was your vehicle not insured?

It was insured but didn’t have business insurance.  Plus I made a claim on third party insurance as it was a big digger.  They took the case forward and ended up telling me I left my vehicle there and went to attend site induction.  And didn’t pay out.  By then my car was not drivable and had to be scrapped for £120. The repair bill was over 4 grand and I couldn’t afford it as it was Covid lockdown

I don't understand why you couldn't claim on your insurance when theirs failed to pay out?

I think that he is saying that he did but the claim was refused on the grounds that he shouldn’t have left his vehicle where he did. I think ‘they’ is his insurers.
