Would you leave a job you’re not happy in?

Currently 33 years old and been doing HGV driving for the past 10+ years now. I find it very boring and stressful at times plus this type of work doesn’t give you much work life balance as most employers plan you a 12/13 hour day. I just feel abit stuck at the moment and not sure which path to take I am in a good position financially. But it feels like i want to quit every week lol.

If you're unhappy now, and if it doesn't seem likely that things will get better, now is as good a time as any to start planning for the future. If you aren't sure what you would like to do, start by thinking what you don't want to do - at least that will start to narrow the field. With a probable working life of another 30 years, it makes no sense to continue in a job where you aren't happy if you can find a viable alternative.
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

Most jobs become boring and repetitive over time. Could you use the time spent in the cab more constructively?  You obviously have hours to fill in which you could listen to a whole array of things. .
  • Yes. Life is to short. You can change how you feel with time passing.

People go on there is no jobs out there, but in 3 weeks of looking (and got out of the call centre job that would have lovely in 2012 or 2015.....) I've managed to make 60 applications and much has been local! I've been fortunate to alter what type of work I was doing and I'm slightly older so it's possible.

Next week I start a part time temporary job in the evening in a factory doing goods in - If I don't try I'll never know.
Seems nuts that my very first job in '1998 only paid 6.5k for working full time, whereas 16 hours these days will bring in 10k per year!
I'm also fingers very much crossed for getting Order Processing role during the day, where I would be the junior and could end up with 2 jobs (for a while). Certainly if I was the academic type, being part-time alone, it would be ideal for being able to study.

The old threads on here are a real source of comfort, like a good old book - I actually read about a chap who wanted to leave driving in 2010 and go into Insurance call centre work.

Hi, yes I would and in the past I have. A couple of times for a lower salary. To quote all those cliches, there's more to life than money and you only live once. I have heard that HGV driving can be very stressful as you have to be on the ball all the time. Not to mention, it's a lonely life. I do hope none of the HGV employers are making you drive for 12/13 hours per day because according to the government guidelines the maximum number of hours you are allowed to drive is 10. With breaks, of course.  Hopefully you are recording all your hours on a weekly record sheet or tachograph.

You could register with some of the online agencies, I registered with Indeed a few years ago and they still send me regular emails with all the jobs that suit my skills and qualifications in my area. They seem to be quite good, although I'm no longer looking for that kind of employment. https://uk.indeed.com/

Even the government has a website for jobs - https://www.gov.uk/find-a-job

You're only 33 and you'll probably have to work for another 33 years so it'd be good if you could do something you like a bit better than HGV driving.

Just start by having a look around the internet, see what you can find and take it from there. There's no need to rush into anything right now but you can certainly think about switching careers, can't you?

I hope you are joking .  An HGV driver should have all their focus on driving, not attempting to listen to training packages when on the road.
For the OP, first step is to think of other work you might like to do.  Second is to see if it is practical i.e. available and paying enough to cover the bills.  Third obtain the requisite knowledge to get a job in that area.  Fourth start applying for job.
In the current climate do not give up a job until you have another one to go to.

OP, I'll let you know my answer in the near future as I'm thoroughly miserable and fed up in the job I'm in and as close to cutting the cord as I ever have been in my career.

Yes, it pays very very well, but.... well Maslow was probably right.

i have had jobs where i don't want to be there and it is really horrible.  sounds like you need a new direction, maybe start looking for jobs in other areas and plan to leave.

You are too young to be doing a job you don’t get satisfaction from and dread going to.  Look now for other work, on the local Facebook page in our area it seems all the businesses are looking for staff, maybe look on your pages.  Get a C V done, ask for help if you are not sure how to get one done.  Would your employer have any other jobs you could transfer to?  What about going self employed?  Are there any sort of agency businesses where a contractor can get a driver at short notice?  Is there any need for this?  Start thinking about what you want from a job.  Good luck.
