O/S Daily Saturday 17 April 2021
This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!
As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning
Morning everyone
Hugs to those that want/need them, those who are poorly and those who are looking after a poorly person x
Happy birthday to those with a birthday x
Frosty start to the day again this morning, looks cold..
DH watching catchup tv, I'm enjoying my first cuppa and a brekkie bar, I'll shower shortly. DS1 still in his pit. DS2 settled and happy.
Yesterday I got done what I wanted and last night we had burgers/chicken burgers for dinner with salad, onion rings and chips - all eaten and enjoyed. Tonight we'll have sweet chilli chicken and minted lamb kebabs with salad and chips.
I had news from work and I'm happy with what I've spoken to them about and where I am moving forward. I can't put too much as I don't know what has happened to other colleagues and if there are some that may not have the decision they wanted. I'm a bit worried about my colleague who I've been working closely with as she was going to let me know when she knew and I've not heard anything - so may give it a day or 2 then text.
Keep safe and well x

Morning folks and thanks NMLC. Pleased you got good news on the work front but it sounds as though it may not be for everyone.
Another gorgeous start of blue sky and sun. I can't honestly remember the last time we had rain. I had to water the pots out back yesterday as they were all very dry. No sign yet of the summer bulbs I planted popping through.
I am having a little bus ride this morning to the next town along the valley bottom. I didn't add certain fruits and salad stuff to my order yesterday as I prefer to pick out my own, so off to the little open market again.
No plans for this afternoon but if it's warm enough I may sit out with my book. Yesterday there was a bit of a nippy breeze which took the edge of the temperature.
Have a good day folks if you can and ((HUGS)) for the poorlies and those with poorly loved ones. Take care one and all xx

Good morning everyone
It's already sunny here so I think it's going to be a lovely day. I have just polished off the last couple of crumpets and will make a cuppa in a minute to wash them down with. My leg is giving me a lot of pain at the moment. I had a moment of madness a few days ago and just scratched it raw as it was so so itchy but the consequences are not worth the bit of relief I got. I won't go into the gory details but it is hurting me a lot. The nurse came out and dressed it yesterday but she didn't tell me off so that was a relief.
I spoke to my lovely sister yesterday and she remains upbeat and positive. Her hair is falling out in huge swathes but she just laughs and says it will give her more time in the mornings as she doesn't have to straighten it any more. She started a different chemo on Monday and the surgeon is hoping to operate on her by the middle of June depending on what her scans show. All my sisters are going away next weekend to Cornwall for a break. I do feel a little left out but it is what it is. I hope they all have a lovely time though.
nmlc, I am pleased for you that your work has finally come through for you xx
TA, enjoy your bus trip out xx
Ok, the kettle is calling me so I will disappear. Hope you all have a great day whatever you are up to, take care xx12 -
Morning folks.Well done on the good work news nmlc, it'll be a relief. I've seen two sets of colleagues go in my last but one job, it's never easy balancing happiness and sorrow.DM's slow trawl through the letters from her mother are a source of great joy for us both. This lot are from the very early 60s. I come out of them very well! My Omi describes me as a 'free spirit' with a sweet and loving nature, it's true, I've always hated to conform to what I see as petty rules or orders. My beloved Dad blossomed in the military, I'd not have lasted past my first 'you're joking'. 🤣
I'm still knee deep in old photographs, scanning, naming, sorting into folders and binning. Seventeen albums now emptied with four or five to go. It's a bittersweet experience. A pile of boxed shoes are on the dining table waiting for my attention.DM is hardly eating now. I encourage her as gently as possible and just make sure she has everything she wants. A close friend told me that he greatly regretted forcing his partner to eat when very ill and then found food secreted around the room. Tiny titbits are the way for now. This morning it's the usual shopping trip. DM's crossword friend is coming round this afternoon, he really enjoys cake and is now taking home a bigger doggy box than before. My thoughts are with the poorlies and those looking after the poorlies. I hope there is sunshine for everyone. Happy Saturday to all.12 -
Morning all.
Thanks for the thread nmlc and hugs to all those in need .
We're off for our second have this morning, Steve has it planned like a military operation as he wants to visit the hardware shop and the bakers. He will have forgotten what he has planned and start all over again when he gets up.
Have a good day everyone.
Hugs HesterChin up, Titus out.10 -
Good morning, it's another nice morning here.Glad you've had some good news from work NMLC.We had a busy day yesterday by our standards anyway - DH got the charity bags out that we've had since November, and we've added some stuff. Went through our coats that were in the landing cupboard, and some of them were for the chop, we had too many. We store coats on a rail in the loft, on a seasonal basis, if you see what I mean, so some winter coats have been despatched up there. The rail has a plastic cover so things don't get dusty.I was dithering over quite a smart little jacket that I don't wear very often - should it go or not? Dh remarked that Theresa May used to wear jackets like that. In the end I decided to keep it, but I know it'll be now known as Theresa. We loaded the car and went to the back door of one of the chazzers, and got rid of the lot. There was a nice coat among the stuff but I haven't worn it for a long time so no point in keeping it. DH put his suit in as well, another hardly ever worn item.Gers, you are finding some interesting things in your Mum's cupboards, sounds as if some of it shouldn't be thrown out, what will you do with it? Hope the cream works on the sore place.Snoozer, sorry to hear Steve is in hospital, hope he'll soon be home.Bella, you're still busy with house stuff - hope it gets settled and calmer soon.Nanny that book you are reading sounds a bit unusual!!We're going to Ar*os to pick up a new kettle today, and will also go to Du*elm, it's nearby. I might as well do some shopping while we're out as well.DD and family have gone to their static in N Yorks for the first time this year, so it'll be a lovely change for themHope everyone has a good day, be careful with your leg Dumpling.Take care folks14

Morning, hugs if you need one.
Its a bright sunny morning, but not warm except through the glass in the sitting room. I just went out to the coal house freezer and it was quite nippy. DB is out sowing seeds.
Haircut yesterday, 3 inches off all over, just washed it in the shower, so feels good.
We went yesterday and took the quilt in, lovely lady, she and her husband lived in South Korea up to 5 years ago, he was involved in the oil industry. She has what she calls 'a shed' in the garden which houses her long arm machine and the fabric for a small business she runs. I had to be reminded it was getting late, we were so busy chatting about various people we know. She will ring me when its ready. I need to cut and sew the binding ready.
Lamb for tomorrow, I need to make slits and put slivers of garlic in and then marinade it in red wine in the fridge ready to cook tomorrow. I could not get shoulder of lamb, so had to make do with half a leg.
Tomato and broccoli quiche for supper with salad. trifle for dessert.7 -
Morning all
Bright and sunny here but very cold, I have a towel wash on the go which can be hung out later, OH can put his work clothes in after.
We went to the pub last night and had a very enjoyable couple of hours it was bliss not having to cook or wash up, it was cold though and by the time we got home I was shivering I got my warm pyjamas on and OH lit the fire and I put a blanket over me but just could not get warm till I went to bed, it was worth it though we really enjoyed it.
The boot sale has opened up again today so OH had gone off there happily, hopefully he will buy something cheap to sell on at a good profit and add to our holiday fund he is very good at spotting a good deal and we pay for most of out holidays like this.
Not sure about dinner tonight but there is lots in after shopping yesterday so will pick something after this, dw needs emtying and breakfast things putting in and when OH comes back we can have a clean through.
Picked up my prescription from the hospital yesterday and got it filled there, I got the 'good' tamoxifen which is the same as the first lot I had which caused no headaches so I will try these again and then see if my local chemist can get them in, fingers crossed that all this works !!
Gers sorry to hear mum is not eating too well, I hope she picks up soon xxx
Have good days all xx11 -
nmlc, so glad that you have had good news. It's a shame that it can't be good for everyone, it's very hard to lose long-time colleagues who have become friends.
TA, like you I have been out with the wateringcan. It seems very early to be worrying about things in the garden drying up. I'm starting a garden from scratch, so really don't want to lose anything.
dumpling, ouchie! When the urge to scratch comes upon you it's almost impossible to resist it. Sometimes a hard rubbing will be enough, but sometimes you remember that just too late.
Gers, old family letters are precious. My father always grieved over the letters my mother destroyed at the beginning of her dementia. She was brilliant with words and he treasured the letters she sent him during the war. There was one in particular that she wrote to him after she had escaped from Southampton with me in the middle of the Blitz.. It described in almost poetic terms how she and my grandmother picked me up and managed to get on a bus going to Salisbury where my great Aunt lived. She was given a seat as she was carrying me, but my grandmother had to stand the whole way. How people were just walking into the New Forest carrying nothing, just to get away, and how I entertained the whole bus load by pointing out the bombs exploding all around and demanded that they admire the, "pretty lights."
Your DMs letters are a whole family history. Treasure them.
Hester, good luck and gritted teeth!
ScarletRibbons, well done on finding a CS prepared to take things. Here they have pulled down the shutters. There was one that opened one morning a week and would only take 2 carrier bags full per person. I believe that even that one has stopped.
Nothing planned here for today. It is newspaper and puzzles day for me.I believe that friends are quiet angels
Who lift us to our feet when our wings
Have trouble remembering how to fly.13 -
Thanks everyone. Steve saw the haematology consultant yesterday - he's a world expert and so we've not seen him since the initial consultations. Apparently they spent most of the time talking about Steve's eye op - it made the Dr feel queasy. Anyway, the upshot is that he'll be in until at least Monday to make sure they knock it on the head before starting oral anti-b's.
Gers, I'm full of admiration for you, you look after your mum so well, these must be such bittersweet days for you. Dad was the same, he didn't want to go to hospital at any cost in his final days and we managed to keep him at home. Mum enjoyed being in hospital, people to talk to and being waited on but I'm the same as dad, I hate the places and can't wait to get out.
NMLC, I'm glad you go the news you wanted, it must be a great relief. Steve went through the process several times and in fact once was within a few days of being made redundant when the company asked him to stay in the best job he ever had. It's such an unsettling feeling though.
I have to pick up a parcel this morning and as it's so nice I might drive over and sit in Chris and Crystal's garden this afternoon. I'll see.13
