GSK Share Price

GSK has been one of the worst performers in the FTSE100 but the share price has risen sharply today. What’s happened?

Could be good news at last for long suffering GSK shareholders. It will be very interesting to see where GSK goes from here?

Hedge fund Elliott has taken a "sizable" long position.

There's also talk about Emma Walmsley being ousted, or at the very least, being forced to take on the lead for the consumer product side of things rather than the pharma business after the carve out.

Low multiples, decent yield despite the cut, strong brand, industry growth... stock was a decent pick for me despite today's news. Happy to have it in my portfolio, never once thought about cutting losses.

GSK was one of my 'safer' picks when I started picking individual shares; ironically it's the only one in the red, but I've never been overly worried for the long term.

GSK also have some Covid vaccines in final stages so this should also help the share price. EMA to review the Vir/Glaxo COVID Antibody etc
  • I thought covid vaccines were 'not for profit'?

Some are profiting while a couple of companies are doing it on a not for profit basis while the pandemic is going on (e.g. AstraZeneca) though even the ones who aren't coining it in right now will have potential for them to have it as more of a moneyspinner long term if people need ongoing annual topups etc ; and if they have a lot of R&D costs covered as part of delivering hundreds of millions of doses, it's likely to stand them in good stead for future development of useful things in future.

In theory something like AZN's situation of giving up potentially tens of billions of revenue to become a 'national asset' is good from a reputational point of view. Shareholders would grumble about missed $$ opportunities though, as well as the management distraction of making the effort to be seen as saving the world; poor communication about efficacy rates etc and logistics for what could be delivered seems to have been quite clumsily handled in recent months.

I was very fortunate to have sold my holding of GSK in my SIPP at approximately £17 so made a good profit on the share price with dividend payments on top. I was going to buy in again last week mainly because I feel the current share price is very undervalued. However, now that the Elliott hedge fund has bought in this is a very interesting prospect so I have decided to buy back in on Monday. In my opinion the share price is still very low so I can only see it going one way from here. Let’s see....

GSK has been by some as more of an income share with dividends on the higher end, some of the more popular income trusts have GSK in their portfolio.  It certainly would not be in my top of the list for growth stocks imo.

With its planned 2022 split into separate pharma and consumer healthcare companies it's becoming an M&A breakup play as there's speculation that these separate companies will be small enough to look tempting to others. IIRC it's still promising dividends of 80p for 2021 but this will need to be cut.
