Owning Own Home

Options
Hi all. I have no idea where to ask this or even entirely sure what I am asking.
I own a house outright that my sibling lives in. My sibling has various health issues and is in receipt of certain benefits.

Is there any way he can own his own home but without losing his benefits? I'm not trying to swindle the system or anything like that, it is my house he lives in paid for by me. I want to now buy another home for me (I rent elsewhere) and owning this home will cause me issues with mortgages/2nd house Stamp Duty.
I'm sure if I just gave my sibling the house then he will lose all benefits and then we are in a worse situation as he can not work etc.

Is there any way this can be done? some kind of trust, or anything like that?
Sorry its not the most clear question, i'm a bit lost.

Thank you

Owning a home doesn't cause benefits to stop, aside from housing benefit or the housing element of UC. Your sibling would be responsible for repairs and maintenance.

Be aware you will probably have a CGT liability due to it not being your primary residence.
Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.
  • I always wondered what would happen with my benefits when I inherited my mum's house. I live alone in my mum's house..she went into a care home few months ago. Her house was disregarded for how care home cost as I am disabled and her daughter.
I am assuming that when I inherit i will lose all my means tested benefits even though I will b alone in house which I will continue to live in as it is adapted for me (I have physical disabilities) so I may have to sell it to live on.  I have seen that someone has posted a link to what the benefits agency will disregard.  So I will look into that. There is just so much worry with the care home being 1 hour and half away from me (long drive for me) and it NOT having a excellent QCC report. Social services say they r looking to move her closer but nothing happens. From July.

You've commented on a thread that's 6 months old, especially when your situation is completely different to the OP.  Starting a new one would have been better.
To answer your question, the home that you live in is disregarded for all means tested benefits. It would be a little ridiculous if people couldn't claim means tested benefits because they own the home they live in.
