not what the bloke told us. we get a few quid a month.. not much.

For example OH used to be on 50p more than national min wage. he would get over £300 a month working tax credit. He changed job and now on 26p more. now he gets nothing.

He called them up and they asked about our status. when he told the bloke on the phone he is a home owner, the bloke told him we arent entitled to much as we dont have the same rights as someone who rents/non homeowner. This did anger him and asked if we are being punished for being homeowners, the bloke said yeah. My OH then asked what can we claim for as we struggle with his wages to bill ratio.
The bloke at HMRC said he isnt allowed to tell us what we can claim for.

moral of the story is why was he entitled to £300 a month working tax credits at 50p above nation min wage now at 26p above nothing.
what is the cut of for working tax credits?

     Change in working hours?
Change in your own income or benefits?
    Child leaving school?
    Change in rental income?
Losing disabled worker or child elements?
Paying less childcare when child goes to school or gets older?

    Lots of possibilities and more

Bloke on the phone was talking nonsense there isn't even a question about if you own your own home when applying!

You should contact citizens advice to do a benefit check up.

weve just done a check on HMRC. we are only entitled to just over £235 a month total benefits.

thats child tax credit, zero for working tax credit.

How does one qualify for this £500?

You may get a one-off, tax-free payment of £500 if, on 2 March 2021, you were getting either:

    • Working Tax Credit
    • Child Tax Credit and were eligible for Working Tax Credit but you did not get a payment because your income is too high to get Working Tax Credit payments

so i assume being 26p over Nat. Min wage means we will get this payment?

we get child tax credits, working above min wage, no working tax credit is our scenario.

Cant really say based on your hourly rate lots of other things ate taken in to account. Hours worked, other income, children having a disability etc

As the link states, if your tax credits includes an amount for WTC but you don't receive it because your income is too high. Either check your award letter or wait to be contacted by HMRC.

That is complete nonsense as regards Tax Credits.

As a homeowner what you cannot do is get help with rent (whether through Housing Benefit or UC). In respect of everything else your entitlement is exactly the same as anybody else with similar circumstances.

The rate of pay is irrelevant. Tax Credits are based on annual income.
If you meet the qualifying conditions for WTC then your Tax Credits will be based on a calculation of both WTC and CTC. You may then receive no WTC due to your income but would still qualify for the £500.
If you do not meet the qualifying conditions for a WTC and you claim is calculated on CTC only then you do not get the £500.

Neither of which are anything to do with HMRC anyway so how would one of their call handlers know anything about that?!  OP, you need to not rely on what call handlers tell you (whoever you spoke to was showing DWP-levels of incompetence there!) and maybe do a benefits calculation to see if you'd be better off on UC.
