Apple Trade-In Scam

Does anyone else feel ripped off by the Apple trade-in process? I recently purchased an iPhone 12 mini in full partly driven by the trade-in offer - my phone wasn’t perfect and explained that but wasn’t given the opp to input the details - it did however spit out an offer of £225. I went ahead with the order and surprise surprise the actual trade in offer was £60. Just feel this is a scam to push consumers into making a purchase under false pretences as it’s unlikely you’re going to reject an alternative offer once you’re set up with your new phone. Apple unsurprisingly were rubbish so thought I’d ask you lovely lot if you’d experienced something similar

  •  Sent my hubby's mac to them, few years old but perfect working order. They offered £0! Said the screen was pixelated hmph
Cheeky things asked if they should keep and dispose of it. Told them no i want it back.

Son now has it in his room, nothing pixelated that we can see.
  • That’s so cheeky!! Mine was ‘pixelated’ too (wasn’t). Should probably have asked for my phone back too - feel like an idiot now haha 😛

What phone did you trade in as the only one around that initial £225 offer would have been XS or later phone?

also what wasn’t perfect about your phone that you could not give details?
  • I went through the 0% finance and traded my old phone in and luckily got the full amount they said I could get. I was a bit worried as the screen had a few light scratches but thankfully it was ok.

Are you able to ask them to inspect it again?

I imagine the poster meant that the website only had predefined options (excellent, very good, good etc.) so they chose the one closest to the phone's condition, and that there was no option to describe why they selected that option.

I understand that but it would have been interesting to know what they would have liked to have put in as extra details. Plus apple don't don't give excellent, good options

Options can be for good condition

answer yes if all of the following apply.

    • It turns on and functions normally
    • All the buttons work
    • The cameras work
    • The body is free of dents and scratches
    • The touchscreen and back glass are undamaged
If you answer no then further on it will ask more questions and one of them is the body of the phone in good shape

Answer yes if all of the following apply.

    • It’s free of major cracks, chips and scratches
    • If there’s glass on the back, it’s not shattered

Unfortunately if you don't answer yes at this point it will reject the phone completely only offering recycling option.

If you do answer yes then you will be faced with question asking is touch screen and camera in good condition

Answer yes if all of the following apply.

    • The touchscreen is free of cracks, chips and scratches
    • The cameras work
If you can't answer yes to that then it can for example drop £230 offer down to £80 for example the iPhone XS

I guess it was your original phrasing that confused me. Your response above is much clearer. :)

I think apple's only motivation is to get you to buy more of their products. If I recall there was a lawsuit against them not long ago due to them intentionally making the battery life drain quicker on old iphones. It's a shame since I really do like their products, but I can't say I agree with how they operate.

Wonderful thing is android world is rich with smart phones and no one is locked into Apple.

Apple provide a service that they think customers will like and return to buy other products and this has been proven since 2007. They don’t need to sell everyone a brand new device every year but just stay focused on what they think is good and let the market decide.

Samsung have nailed it and few of the upcoming Chinese phone companies are doing the same. However plenty have fallen to the way side because they can’t give customers what they like.
