Just a quick comment on Council Tax (CT).
The CT support scheme is separate from UC, and run by your local council.
So if the benefit calculators identified CT support as a benefit you could apply for - then apply to your LA now as it is not related to UC or TC. Update them when / if you move to UC and your income increases.
And as calcotti says no need to feel "like such an idiot not knowing these things" , the sensible thing to do is take and weigh up advice, and use those benefit calculators for confirmation. Just as you are doing.
