Early driving licence renewal
How early can you apply for a renewal of a drivers licence?
I still have 8 months left on my drivers licence.
If i apply for a renewal now, will the start date be the day after the current '4b' date or in a few weeks time when my renewal application had been approved?

This is just the 10yr renewal of the photocard?
Why not leave it until closer to the time?0 -
That's the point. How much do you lose if any?AdrianC said:This is just the 10yr renewal of the photocard?

If i renew 2 months before expiry, is it 9 years and 10 months before the next renewal date or the full 10 years?
If it is the full 10 years how early can i renew?0 -
Late last year I had a couple of months left on my photo driving licence before it expired. I assumed that renewal would a little while so I made the renewal application. I did the renew expecting that the new licence would be valid from the date of expiry of the old licence. This was not the case, the new licence had a start date on the time I did the renewal. So I did actually lose a couple of months......
I did the renewal online and the DVLA checks were completed online too.
If my licence still had 8 months or so to run until expiry, I'd wait until much near the date of expiry.1 -
Unlike passports I don't see any need to renew early, for these things it's always an acceptable "excuse" to say it's with DVLA for processing (which only took a few days the last time I did it).
And despite the repeated dire warnings from MSE about the potential for a £1000 fine - who ever gets fined for an out of date photocard?0 -

Expired photo card - immediate £1000 fine
Drive a car 10 yards on the highway with no tax - car towed and crushed
Drive with no MoT - insurance invalid and perpetrator publicly flogged
Note- using term tax instead of VED gets you a reminder road tax was abolished in 1937
