    It depends what the bulky and heavy items are.

    Do they have a value making it worth paying the extra for removals, or are they things that can be sold/given away/dumped before the move and replacements purchased for the new place?

    In terms of finishing loading on time, if you can hire a lorry for two days, and parking overnight in the street is allowed, you could load almost everything on day 1 and leave only the bare essentials (e.g. just a matress, not the bed) and valuables to be loaded first thing on the day of the move.  Use the lorry as overnight storage.

    Also only being 300m away means if necessary you could drive one lorry to the new place then walk back to collect a second one if you needed to hire two for the volume of stuff you've got.

    From a random van hire company - two 7.5 tonners (with tail lift) costs about £600 to hire for two days.

    If you can solve the bulky and heavy item problem.

    Your quotes do seem high. I am moving in a week's time from West Yorkshire down to Hampshire, so about 3half hours drive. That's costing me £1980.  The highest quote was £2300.

    Would sound like you have a lot of stuff?

    Assuming you're in a chained-sale-and-purchase scenario, remember you have to empty the sold property COMPLETELY before you can move one single teabag into the purchased one.
    I needed to be able to compare the cost/effort between what I think I need, and what I may actually need which aren’t necessarily the same.  Hence contracting professional companies and using resources such as this forum.

    If hiring a man with a van was £300 and full
    removal was £800 then for the extra £500 I would be happy to just let the firm do it.

    Until I actually got the quotes, I wasn’t able
    to accurately guess the cost of removal.  And when the first quote came in at £2,300 I was so shocked that I created this post to get further input, which it has done and for which I am pleased an grateful.

    Also this is my first move as part of a chain, there are lots of factors which I had not considered and which the removal firms I have spoken to and this thread have helped me understand.

    As an update, I continued to get quotations from both lorry rental firms, man with van set ups and full removal firms.

    I have now found a company who will send two staff, load and carry the lot, for £900 all in.

    I have to get the boxes and dismantle and pack everything.

    Having now consulted this forum
    and had quotes from many firms, I’m happy this is a fair and reasonable price for what it also a level of service which suits my needs.

    I moved in January from London to Norfolk, 150 miles and paid a little of £1k.  They collected all of our stuff from a storage unit which wasn't on the ground floor.   £900 seems much more reasonable.

    £900 seems more reasonable. I thought your first quotes were high. When we moved in 2019, we got quotes between £750-£2000 (full packing); t was quite clear to me that the companies were pricing it depending on whether they wanted/needed the work. We paid about £950 in the end to a small local firm with a good rep. 2 lorries, 4 guys, one afternoon packing and loading van #1 + one morning loading van #2, then unloading both. They had other jobs before and after!
