Engine Carbon Clean

Is getting an engine carbon clean worth it, the ones where they plug some machine in on your driveway?

Or is it just a money making exercise with no real benefits?

Some local company offering them for £50 and they come to your house. If I was to get it done it would be for my 2014 Focus 1.6TDCI with 74K miles.

  • You can simply run some water through it. There are videos on YouTube. Just don't go mad with water or you'll hydrolock the engine. I wouldn't personally pay someone to decarb unless there was a problem with the engine; modern fuels are very clean.

Running water through the engine sounds logical, give it a go

Adding additives to your fuel regularly is also beneficial especially if the car is primarily a round town runaround.

I recently removed the head for the first time on my 23 year old V6 galaxy. I have owned it for 18 years and I was surprised how little carbon build up there was on the pistons and head.

Well to be honest I've been filling up with Shell V-Power all year, 3 or 4 tank fulls now plus I regularly put Redex in when I can buy it on offer.

I know a taxi driver that used one on a MK3 Mondeo and it never ran properly after. He had to buy another car
it as there wasno way it would pass the inspection he had to have done on it.

I would not touch them unless it was someone elses money and the car was on the way to the scrappers anyway.
