While I understand it would be a lot of work to have do the traffic light system on a regional basis rather than a country basis, with the USA, Canada and Australia it would make sense to look at an exception.

Well The tiny Channel Islands do exactly that for UK Arrivals and they are open from April 26th.

Regarding the cost of Tests I don't think they'll be anywhere near the £100 plus being bandied about once it get's going.

More like £50 or less I predict.

You'll need to get one test before returning to the UK, so that will depend on how much they cost in Spain, Italy, Greece etc. not what price they are in the UK.  There's a suggestion that package operators like TUI could bulk buy tests to bring down the cost but the same package operators are strongly against testing for people returning from green countries, so it may not be in their best interests to help bring down the cost too much.
I think this demonstrates the urgent need for a Vaccination Passport which should go some way to eliminating all this testing nonsense.
I disagree, that puts younger people who can least afford it in general at a disadvantage.

I do, however, believe that there should be pre-departure testing with Rapid Flow testing required on arrival. If this comes back positive, a PCR test should follow.

The first two should be chargeable, however any further testing should not, as genetic sequencing is government policy and not essential.

For me the best times to visit southern Europe are May and October, when it's not too hot and not too crowded.  More than half of May is already ruled out and I think flights operating are likely quite booked up for the final 2 weeks of May.  So I would interpret that as I could look at a foreign holiday in October, not that I'm going to.

I think a better analogy would be the recently publicised new Aer Lingus flights between Manchester and the USA.  I'm not sure if they are available to book yet but we know the flights will exist in the future so you can think about travelling to the USA on a direct Aer Lingus flight.  I think for visiting the Prime Minister you need to be invited and only very few people get invited.
