Yes sorry, November 2018. I looked at the service history schedule earlier and it says 10,000 miles or every 2 years for intervals. Every 12 month for oil changes. So I don't really have a leg to stand on with that.. and in hindsight should have had it done.

But financially speaking I have recently left my job and started a trade apprenticeship. This means for a year I'm on minimum apprenticeship wages. Paying the monthly payments as it is has been difficult, but I certainly don't have the money spare to pay for repairs. This is why I'm considering cancelling the finance and handing it back if that's an option (if not damaging in a major way to my credit score).

The only other thing I could do is pay the finance for a car that's not working and repair it once my wage goes to normal minimum wage which is about 6 months away. Just seems silly paying for a car that I can't use and only just afford. Plus doing this would mean using public transport to work and college and increasing my monthly outgoings.

The last service was November 18 but I have only driven it roughly 4000 miles since that date.
    Can we just clarify...

Do you mean November the 18th, 2020... or do you mean November 2018?
Good point - I read it as November 2018.
Which makes sense based on the timelines given as 22 months without a service.

@RussBlue How much longer does the finance have to run? Is it PCP or something else? If the warranty was about to run out then if the finance doesn't coincide you'd be on your own for that period of time anyway.

Doubtful they'll take it back in the condition its in, as for cancelling finance you'll get chased for that, what makes you think you can do this?

Got like another 2 years of finance left on it. I was thinking of saying I can't afford the payments for a car that's not working, as I need a car for work. No car, no work, no money. I don't know if I can do this without it affecting my credit this is what I'm asking if anybody has been in a similar situation and able to offer advice.

No chance, your in the firing line for their payments.

You may wish to consider a turbo from a damaged vehicle.

Diesel, 2k miles/year, not serviced for 22 months with 12 monthly oil change requirement, and not checked the oil once since the last service...

DPF attempting regen, failing through lack of use, unburnt fuel diluting the oil.

Sorry, but there's no way the finance company are going to accept liability for this. And, if you want to get out of your obligations to repay the money you've borrowed, that's what they'd need to do. The car is not broken because of something that's their responsibility.

    When you say...

You may want to consider getting the car to a cheaper non-dealer garage and get it fixed with used parts - it'll be considerably cheaper than getting the dealer to do it - but I'd say from everything we've now found out that you'll be liable for the payments - so you need to work out how much finance is left - you could ask for a settlement figure - then work out whether it's cheaper to sell the car as scrap, and somehow find the difference to settle the finance, sell the car as scrap, and keep paying your monthly payments, or repair the car and keep paying your monthly payments, or repair the car sell it and make up the shortfall out of your own funds somehow. Probably none are ideal solutions, but as you are where you are, you'll have to work out the best option for you that you can manage.

Thanks, I was thinking today the best solution for now rather than doing anything drastic would be to get the car back from the dealership and get an opinion from a more local garage that like you say may offer cheaper parts and labour. Then weigh up the costs of that against how much is outstanding left on the vehicle. Might even be able to get a decent amount selling the car as spares and repairs if I'm lucky.

When I replaced turbo on my Golf it cost £600 with mobile mechanic compared to quotes of £1100 at local garage and over £2000 at VW so there are a wide range of prices.

The problem you have no matter what is wrong with the the vehicle is lack of servicing. That would void the warranty. Most cars servicing is either or = X miles or Y time whichever comes first. Most vehicles require a service every 12 months and the warranty company will very likely impose that condition. Very low mileage vehicles actually do need more servicing.
