Laptop screen gone black.

Used my laptop this morning & it was fine. Now when I switch it on the screen remains black. Although if you look at it very closely, you can just make out windows going thru POST to the login screen.

Anyone any idea's? I have managed to fix the keyboard on it before which was a loose connection so hopefully with a bit of guidence from someone I could have a crack at sorting the screen too.

However does anyone know how to pinpoint problem i.e. is it the inverter or backlight ?

We had exactly the same problem earlier today after OH decided to vacuum clean and blast with air compressor, hoping to quieten down a noisy fan.

    Not recommended!

We checked the battery and hard drive were secure - they seemed fine so don't think that was the problem. Then we powered up laptop in safe mode (by pressing F8 key repeatedly), then managed to do a restore. Start, Programmes, System Tools, Restore. Restored to an earlier date and screen back to normal.

Hope this helps a litte, good luck

You can confirm it is the backlight that has failed. (or the inverter that powers it).

Get a torch, prefereably with a dark/metal body.
Hold it right up against the screen, switched on.

Whilst the laptop is booting or doing stuff look for the screen changing in the light reflected off the TFT/LCD surface.

You should be able to make out text changes whan the laptop is booting or see the start menu appear when you press the windows button.

Its a little tricky but knowing the problem may help reduce quotes or allow you to have a go yourself.
