How would anyone but the real VISA Mastercard know that someone is fraudulently spending $600 on my card RIGHT NOW! ?
OP is right to be suspicious, and OP is actually wrong to say it's a scam because they *wouldn't* give a number to call back on.
Definitely check with the real ARGOS (number found on your Argos paperwork, their actual website) or your real bank, to verify this.
Your Bank can not confirm a telephone number... If they do it is simply by the rep looking on google..Life in the slow lane0 -

First, there is no such thing as "VISA Mastercard" -- so when they do call you, you can tell them to do biologically impossible things to themselves.
I said to call Argos (the real one) on a verified number from a genuine source (not number provided from "The Man That Said He Was From Argos") or to call the other end of that transaction, your own bank, again on a real genuine bank number, to verify the claim that "You Have Been Refunded Now Must Pay Us Again".
At no point did I say that the bank would, should, or could, confirm anything about telephone numbers.

In fairness you said Visa Mastercard. Born again said Visa/Mastercard.

You said: "Definitely check with the real ARGOS (number found on your Argos paperwork, their actual website) or your real bank, to verify this". When I first read this, in the context of the thread, I also thought you meant to check the supposed Argos number with your bank. And he did say VISA/Mastercard where I take "/" to mean "and/or". (Plus I think he works for a bank and/or VISA/Mastercard so I think he knows the difference)1 -
OP - This sounds suspect.
I would not agree to give any details to them and change your email password.
Likely the refund is made by the scammer who has your bank details. Could just be a faster payment stating refund Argos.
I would think they are trying to get your address details etc, card details etc etc to make a fraudulent purchase.
My reply to Argos:
Send me a letter on letterheaded paper with your phone number and i'll call you.
Well done for being aware
