Customs ID request before shipping from Italy

I’ve bought some jeans from an eBay seller in Italy. It looks like a private seller from the other items on sale. Before shipping them the seller says the customs form requires a National ID from me. I’m not a business so don’t have one and the options are to provide passport number, driving licence number or NI number - none of which I want to share and which could be available to the seller, customs and courier services indefinitely along with my name and address. I really want the item I bought as I’ve been looking for them for a while now and they are no longer available to buy elsewhere. I have thought about providing fake numbers but don’t know if they are checked on the way and the parcel could be held in transit somewhere. Is there a way round this problem?
