HD recorder/surround sound purchase help please

Hi
Offspring has asked for a tv recorder for bedroom for Xmas (with facilities like Sky +), has also asked for a surround sound system too for music play. Already has a HD Tv with built in freeview.
I've been looking on the net but am baffled TBH. Some recorders (looking at pics) seem to have disc options
others appear not to
Asda apparently have an 'ONN' recorder for £100-ish (haven't seen it yet and don't know if it has disc option ) does anyone know if it's a worthwhile buy please?
As far as surround sound system goes, is there likely to be a clash of compatibility Sorry to be thick, if this is a daft question:rotfl:
If anyone has any recommendations on these items I'd be very grateful
