General question about refunds on credit cards - sorry I am a newbie to them!

Just took out the first credit card ever in my life (in my forties!) to get points as I spend on Amazon (got an Amazon Platinum card).

There's something I am not quite sure about with regards to how refunds work on credit cards.

Let's say I buy something for £100 which comes off my credit limit amount for that month. At the end of that month £100 is taken from my current account via Direct Debit. If, after that time, I was to find the item is faulty or something like that and the retailer refunds me £100, but my credit card is unused that month, presumably the £100 re-appears on the credit card as 'credit' I am giving to the credit card company? If I want that £100 *back* into my current account, is that possible, or does that £100 just get set against future purchases on the credit card?

Confused! Debit cards are much simpler ;)
