It's up to individuals whether they break the law or not. I don't like paying taxes any more than anybody else [see below!] but those who don't pay their taxes are just passing the burden onto the rest of us.I love these arguments. Please explain how the billions of financial transactions are monitored to highligt this connection.".....where it is corrupt, purge it....."0 -
well thank you for your help, but i'm not talking about mega bucks here we only have approx. 190 shares @ £3.29 per share, So surely we are'nt talking about stamp duty are we? I'm not even sure if he will agree to it this yet but i need to try and understand what i should be doing, if he does. Ive downloaded the stock transfer form but unsure how to complete it. Its just that I would like to follow how they go up and down so I though if I offer him about £300 and he would possibly transfer them over to me so that they are in my name.I love being a non smoker (almost 5 years)

Shares in what? A company quoted on the LSE or an unquoted PLC/Ltd?
Are the shares currently in joint names?

a&akay - It's not IHT I am referring to - it's the 0.5% Stamp Duty due on purchase of shares in most cases.
I don't want to labour the point, but if you transfer shares within category 'L' - you are saying that it is a 'Gift Transfer' for no consideration - i.e. you are not paying for them in any way, in which case no Stamp Duty is payable. This may have been true in your case, but does not appear to be so for taj.
Category 'L' covers -
"The conveyance or transfer of property operating as a voluntary disposition inter vivos for no consideration in money or money’s worth nor any consideration referred to in section 57 of the Stamp Act 1891 (conveyance in consideration of a debt etc). (Gift transfer)."
as i believe they are paper shares (he is sending away for the certificate) which box would he tick if he was to gift them to me? They are LSEI love being a non smoker (almost 5 years)
