Can anyone advise on refund position with a cruise which was originally paid for on credit card in 2019 and scheduled to sail in 2020 which was subsequently cancelled and so we transferred it to a 2021 sailing.  Just been informed that the 2021 sailing has now been suspended but when I have asked about getting a refund I have been told that as the 2021 cruise was paid for with cruise credits (from the 2020 cancelled trip) the only refund I can have is future cruise credits.  This seems wrong to me as the very original payment method was credit card.  Can I put in a claim to the credit card company or should I try and push it with NCL?

  • On what t’s and c’s did you accept a credit instead of a refund in 2020?  I hate to say it but I suspect you will have difficulty in securing a cash refund now.  Nothing to stop you trying though.

Quite a few companies are treating it like this.

Your original booking was cancelled, and you were due a full refund at the time.  However you chose to forgo your refund and take travel credit and move the booking.  Now your new booking is cancelled they will refund you by the payment method for that booking - credit.

You could try the credit card but I suspect they will view it like that too.  Might be worth escalating with NCL, only chance I can see you have would be if all the communication at the time was about a date change, and never mentioned credit.

There were basically 2 types of credit once it got clarified

Refund credits are just a delayed refund and should still get the option to get cash back.

Future cruise credits where you convert the booking into a voucher often worth more.
They lose the option to cover back to cash.

Different holiday companies and cruise lines may not have made that clear or even offer both options.

Cruises all fall under package regulations so were always originally due full refund in 14days.
