The glass in our 2x3m kitchen was about £2k including templating (with 5 cutouts for power points/switches) and fitting - cutouts seemed to dramatically increase the cost though.

    [Faints at the cost]

At £2k it would have to be a look for life, like the worktop - which I will be spending thousands on. But a splashback? For that price I think tiles might be the answer although a single piece of tempered glass behind the hob may be doable.

  • Just measure the space for the splashback (leave 2mm gaps all round) then go to your local glazier and ask them to cut you some toughened glass with holes for fixing. When you want to change the colour behind, unscrew glass and paint, put glass back up. Make sure you seal all around with translucent sealant otherwise you'll get insects between the glass and the wall.

You need to make sure the wall where the glass will be is super smooth otherwise you'll get funny marks where the glass squashes up against the bumps.

    It won't cost thousands.

We did the above in our last kitchen, but in my new kitchen I'm going for glass that has been painted on the back to avoid the non-smooth wall problem. It's come up at around £450 for a large hob splash back plus 2 long upstands for the rest of the kitchen.

We had ours done for about £500/£600 the entire wall where the hob is plus under the kitchen window, that’s with 5 cutouts for sockets

Iirc, I think the piece of tempered glass (roughly 1m x 1m) with four holes and fixings was about £60. Add to that the cost of the wallpaper (sky's the limit, lol!) and in this particular case it worked out considerably less expensive than the Fired Earth tiles (£10 each for their 'Marrakech Bahia' 😮) we used in our last-but-one house.....

This is more like it. I also makes me wonder why more people don't go down the tile / wallpaper PLUS tempered glass route for worktops / islands?
