food returns to marks and spencer

Hi there
we bought a xmas pudding from m&s last week, but have realised its way way too big for the amount of people that actually like xmas pudding - so would like to exchange for a smaller size and refund the difference.
the store i went to today said they wouldnt take it back because once it has left the store it could get contaminated (they were saying this about all their food)
does anyone know if this is marks and spencers policy or just one store enforcing its own rules?
thanks for your help!

This is correct just cos you changed you mind they dont have to change it for you,i for one wouldnt want to be buying some food from them that could have potentially have been returned by someone.0

The thought of buying food that someone else has taken home then brought back gives me the complete and utter boke.
Why not donate it to your local church or pensioners group? If you obey all the rules...you miss all the fun!! Katherine Hepburn0 -
I think this also applies to earrings and toiletries without a seal,it is for all our own safety after all.Otherwise it is leaving themselves open to sabbotage and endangering people.0

fair enough. knuckles rapped.0

I tried to do the samething with a bottle of mulled wine but they wouldn't change that either. If it's faulty they'll take it back, no questions, but not because you've changed your mind
If you think you are too small to make a difference, try getting in bed with a mosquito!

Its tradition, just like the turkey you have to have one too big so you get to eat it microwaved until new years day. Least thats what the chef tells me....0

As I understand it, if you walk out and leave a trolley full of shopping that has to be binned too because it could be contaminated...but maybe that's just Tesco.0

I WORK AT MARKS AND SPENCERS
everything has a 90-day return EXCEPT any food/drink item, unless special citcumstances
which are:
- immediate problem (e.g. salad had dead spider in - its happened)
- food is out of date (only when before date on reciept)
- OR when something is obviously wrong e.g meat has funny smell - but is in date etc
when food is taken away it can no longer be returned unless reason above, becuase people do mess with stuff and anything returned has to be destroyed - costing m&s ££££'s
food cannot be returned or exchanged at all0 -
I was in tesco the other day and while I was being served at customer services one woman came in with a carrier bag full of shopping, she said that she had bought her neighbour all of the food for her to make her christmas cake but so had her neighbour that morning. The lady explained that they could not take back the refridgerated items but would refund the rest as she had her receipt, must say I was very shocked. Can say I wouldnt want those food items going in my trolley. If you want the rainbow you have to go through the rain.

Am I missing something??
To say I'm particular about hygiene is an understatement, but I would have no problem about purchasing an item that is in its original condition and perfectly sealed and returned by someone else....What's the issue? Unless they had stabbed it with a hyperdermic needle and injected the item with mercury of course (which is a possibility I suppose, but then that action can equally be taken instore, and has been known to happen in the past!)
How can a perfectly well sealed untouched food product that doesn't require refridgeration or freezing otherwise pose a problem?.....Please someone enlighten me?! 'Cos in Tesco, obviously you wouldn't be any the wiser would you? and therefore I will need to avoid purchasing anything other than refridgerated and frozen items from them?! :rolleyes:Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle. :A0
