Scallops
. A host of legends surround this, one of the loveliest of seafoods, except when overcooked. My favourite true story concerns the young lady scallop preparation worker, interviewed by the 'New Yorker' Magazine. When asked for her honest opinion of the shellfish she said "They don't have much personality".

Yes, I pop in now and again. There's plenty of variety. Just don't stay still too long or you may end up in one of my photos! :D

Beautiful. What a lovely photo Davesnave.
Thanks Goldfinches. I've only been once in mid summer and found it dull and over formal. Decades ago. Looking at Davesnaves photos it looks more my style now.
I'll check on school hols, appts that are playing catch up and the weather and hope there are still some places left :)
It seems scarey to go for such a long drive when I've been at home for the last 18mts but could really do with a treat.

twopenny, the middle garden 'rooms' are formal or stage managed, but other parts of the gardens are more informal, especially the woodland edges. This is the Lower Woodland, not originally open to the public:

I walk woods like that around here. Lush flowering gardens are my pleasure but so many are tidied to within an inch of their life.
Hestercombe used to be a delight with a wonderful head gardener. Now it's been neatened up and your walk is always accompanied by loud huge mowers.
Must try marwood gardens again sometime soon.

I went to uni with the former Head Gardener.....for a time. He wasn't very happy with the course and literally disappeared suddenly during Year 1. No one knew where he'd gone, so my friend and I surmised that perhaps someone had locked him in a broom cupboard for a joke during one of our drunken escapades in the bowels of the old mansion. >:)
It wasn't until Dearly Beloved went to a talk about Hestercombe  a few years ago that I read the handout and learned  where Mr Enigmatic had gone.....and felt slightly very jealous!
Haven't been to Marwood for a few years. It was our kids' favourite due to the friendliness of Dr Smart's dog and the ability to hand feed the huge carp. In those days it was 50p in the honesty box and the prices in the nursery were very reasonable. Don't expect anything less than a full tourist workover now, but the landscape is still lovely and more mature.
