Football Season Ticket T&C refunds

Hi
Thank you for reading this post.
I have a question about football Season Tickets and refunds when matches or the season is cancelled.
My team is Coventry City and the Season Tickets for next season (2021/2022) have just gone one sale. Following the recent pandemic and supporters being unable to go to the matches they have changed their Season Ticket structure to part membership and part season ticket total £302 (it’s about of a 70/30% spilt of the cost and the Membership  is about 70%). You can’t buy a Season Ticket without the Membership. You don’t get anything for the Membership other than a ‘special shirt’.

The Terms and Conditions now state that both parts are strictly non refundable.
The Club did say they will try to offer streaming service (Ifollow) where possible if matches are played where fans are not allowed in (as they are now). While this is not the same as going to the matches at least an alternative has been provided and you get to watch the match you have paid for. I am not disputing this.

But, if a match or the season is cancelled there are no refunds (not pro rota) and you must ‘gift’ it to the Club.
I feel this is very unfair contract on the supporters who will not be receiving  a product they have paid for if the matches don’t take place. How is this ok where in other places such as concerts you can get a refund if the event is cancelled?

I also fear the ‘Membership’ side is just a way to keep the money and worry this is the model that will stay now. It doesn’t seem a very fair deal to the supporters. Even if they did pro rota the refund it would only be on the Season Ticket side which is a small proportion of the total fee paid.

It feels very sad and a lack of good will from the Club that supporters have no choice but to agree to those terms or not get a ticket. I feel that should give you the refund if that is required and then the supporters have the choice if to gift it back to the club.
Are they allowed to do this?
Are other clubs doing this?
Are there any consumer protection laws about unfair contracts or not receiving a product you paid for in regards to season tickets rather than specific events?
Thank you

I feel really lucky supporting Norwich city FC. They have treated fans fairly IMO. With free ifollow this season for supporters who already had a season ticket for this season . NCFC always sell the seasons ticket in the jan/feb for the following Aug start and always sell out. To be honest I am not sure of the T and C if next season is still behind closed doors.

in your position though assuming there are always casual seats available and given Coventry are not in the best financial position why not just buy tickets on a match to match basis
  • Hello.l Photome. Thanks for your reply. You are lucky with Norwich, you have a good team. They have offered IFollow for this season (which I think has improved over the years) and am thankful for. I didn’t have a ST this year as it was obvious we couldn’t go up (plus I wasn’t going to St Andrews for ‘home’).
Next season we are back at the Ricoh so . At the moment they have only selling 8k tickets and no single matches (they are assuming reduce capacity).
