Writing from experience, on a Megane, when the spring goes it moves sideways and rips the inner sidewall right out of the tyre in one revolution- then you aren't going anywhere once it happens as the spring prevents a fresh tyre fitting.Your experience is the opposite of mine.
My car was still drivable (didn't realise it had gone initially apart from a bit of clunking at the back end that was new). No damage to anything else found when it was changed
