That window looks like a bodge job to be honest. I don't think it's original.

It's certainly an unusual setup to say the least.  What is the grey panel around the window?
It almost looks as if the boundary line was moved at some point during development of the estate but before the properties were occupied.

Are you thinking that, originally, the boundary between the two houses should have been where that garage ends and Westwoo's shed begins? That might make sense. I presume that's the same neighb's shed we see over that fence with the black felt roof?

That's exactly what I'm thinking.  The window, or at least that window surround, is almost certainly not original.  The OP may want to have a look at their deeds to see if the fence line is actually where the boundary should be.  If it isn't and he moves the shed it could open up a whole can of worms.

  • It's actually 2 garages side by side and the fence line is approx where the divider is.
The grey/blue is a cladding for 'design' and the window was built when the garage was built rather than a post build addon.

Fence line is correct to the plans/deeds

If light is an issue, they can put a velux (other roof windows are available) in their garage roof.

Never mind the window, I can't wait to see how you get on with that digger.

Looking at the eaves/gutter and drainpipe - where exactly is the boundary line? Do they overhang the boundary or is the wall a tad back from it?  If you put the shed right on the boundary line there may be a gap wide enough for some light to filter down.

So it's up to the op. Do you want your shed in an ideal place and a very annoyed neighbour, or do you want your shed in a less than ideal place and a neighbour who won't do everything within his power to annoy you from now on?

Why would they have a window overlooking their neighbour's garden? Even though it's frosted, it doesn't make sense. The only disadvantage for them will be loss of light - but it's only in a garage and not a kitchen or anything. How much time do they spend in there? They probably have lighting in there anyway as it seems to be integral.

While I never think it's a good idea to antagonise neighbours, in this case it shouldn't be a major issue. It's not your fault that they have a window in a daft place. It does look a bit like big brother is watching you, frosted glass or not. I'd have to shift my shed!

    At least you've told them.

Thanks for the update westwoo.  Any developer who thinks that 'feature' around the window looks good is probably best avoided. :D
